Queer. China. Now.

November 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Queer. China. Now. launches as part of Feast Festival, bringing contemporary Chinese queer short films to Adelaide audiences.

Curated by Adelaide-based artist and curator Xu Xiong, the programme brings together fiction, documentary and experimental filmmaking to explore how queer people live, love and imagine their futures. Through stories of family expectations, marriage, migration, gender expression and chosen family, the films offer intimate, sometimes surprising and often humorous encounters with queer life in China. Most of the selected films have not previously screened in Australia. A performance by local queer dance crew and Q&A follow the screening.

The launch comes at a significant moment for Asian and queer cultural visibility in Adelaide. With OzAsia ending after its 2026 edition, questions about the future of dedicated platforms for Asian and Asian Australian stories have become increasingly urgent. Meanwhile, the recent homophobic assault on a patron following an Adelaide Film Festival screening is a painful reminder that queer visibility and safety cannot be taken for granted.

Against this backdrop, Queer. China. Now. seeks to create space for Chinese queer stories, cross-cultural understanding and community connection. It invites audiences to gather around cinema, encounter lives beyond their own and affirm the importance of being seen, heard and welcomed.

The screening marks the beginning of a broader platform connecting Chinese queer cinema, art and community conversations in Adelaide.
