SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: Painting the Modern Garden - Monet to Matisse
DESCRIPTION:Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art\, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh\, Bonnard\, Sorolla\, Sargent\, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists\, along with many other famous names\, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Royal Academy\, London. From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll\, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs\, abstract color\, decorative design and utopian ideas. Guided by passionate curators\, artists and garden enthusiasts\, this remarkable collection of Impressionists\, Post-Impressionists\, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring facination with gardens today. Long considered spaces for expressing colour\, light and atmosphere\, the garden has occupied the creative minds of some of the worlds greatest artists. As Monet said\, ‘Apart from painting and gardening\, I’m no good at anything’. For lovers of art or lovers of gardens\, this is an ideal film.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: John Singer Sargent -
DESCRIPTION:John Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era. What made his ‘swagger’ portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters\, what they wore and how they were presented to the audience. Through interviews with curators\, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers\, Exhibition on Screen’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art\, culture and fashion. \n\n\n\nFilmed at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston and the Tate Britain\, London\, the exhibition reveals Sargent’s power to express distinctive personalities\, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects\, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio. Sargent’s sitters were often wealthy\, their clothes costly\, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century\, but somehow Sargent’s work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: Klimt & the Kiss
DESCRIPTION:The Kiss by Gustav Klimt is one of the most recognised and reproduced paintings in the world. It is perhaps the most popular poster on student dorm walls from Beijing to Boston. Painted in Vienna around 1908\, the evocative image of an unknown embracing couple has captivated viewers with its mystery\, sensuality and dazzling materials ever since it was created. But just what lies behind the appeal of the painting – and just who was the artist that created it? Delving into the details of real gold\, decorative designs\, symbolism and simmering erotica\, a close study of the painting takes us to the remarkable turn of the century Vienna when a new world was battling with the old. From the director of ‘Frida Kahlo’ and ‘Mary Cassatt – Painting the Modern Woman’ comes a powerful\, gripping and passionate new film.

SUMMARY:Feast Festival - Queer Shorts Selection + Blue Jean
DESCRIPTION:The Capri is proud to host a night of queer films as part of the Feast Festival. We’ll begin with a collection of short films from Queer Screen\, who curate the Mardi Gras Film Festival and always provide us with a diverse range of short films that entertain\, move and educate us\, for the first half of the night. \nThis will be followed by BAFTA nominated\, Blue Jean. In 1988 as Thatcher’s anti-gay laws take effect\, Jean (played by a charismatic Rosy McEwen) struggles to balance her work as a physical education teacher and her relationship with her girlfriend Viv (a standout performance from Kerrie Hayes). When a new student sees her at a lesbian bar\, Jean risks being outed and must decide what she truly values in life. \nThe bar will be open before the shorts commence and during the interval to have a catch up and a good gab about the movies. There will be plenty of hot popcorn and Haigh’s Choccies behind the candy bar too. \nQUEER SCREEN – SHORTS SELECTION\nTHE BOWER\n\nIn 2021\, a florist Terri takes her young employee Jude to Dungeness in the wake of a difficult revelation.
