SUMMARY:Macbeth: David Tennant & Cush Jumbo
DESCRIPTION:David Tennant (Doctor Who\, Broadchurch) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife\, Criminal Record) lead a stellar cast in an ‘enthralling’ (Daily Telegraph) new production of Shakespeare’s MACBETH\, filmed live at the Donmar Warehouse in London\, especially for the big screen. Unsettling intimacy and brutal action combine at breakneck speed as Max Webster (Life of Pi\, Henry V) directs this tragic tale of love\, murder\, and nature’s power of renewal. With staging ‘full of wolfish imagination and alarming surprise’ (The Guardian)\, the immersive 5.1 cinema surround sound places the audience inside the minds of the Macbeths\, asking are we ever really responsible for our actions? \n\n\n\nThis is a special event screening\, so we’ve included a glass of bubbles in your ticket price AND the mighty WurliTzer theatre organ will play the session in from 2:15pm. There will be a non-alcoholic bubbles option available.

SUMMARY:Twilight Time - special screening with Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of John Hughes’ new documentary\, TWILIGHT TIME\, plus a special Q&A session with Film Director John Hughes after the film. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTWILIGHT TIME is a gripping profile of one of the world’s greatest scholars of military strategy and defence\, the Australian professor Desmond Ball – the man who unflinchingly examined Cold War nuclear strategy and advocated for the sovereign defence of Australia.Hailed by former US president Jimmy Carter as “the man who saved the world” for his work proving the fallacy of the doctrine of ‘limited nuclear war’\, Ball is remembered as the ‘insurgent intellectual’ whose life-long investigation of controversial US military base Pine Gap enraged Australia’s defence establishment. Ball’s opposition and activism against the American war in Vietnam in the 1960s earned him decades of ASIO surveillance. After the fall of the Berlin Wall\, Ball offered guidance on signals intelligence to ethnic minorities targeted by the Burmese military. His work on Australian governments’ complicity with the Indonesia invasion of East Timor in 1975 gave the public a taste of secrets governments would prefer remain hidden.Employing a wealth of archival footage\, veteran documentarian John Hughes (Senses of Cinema\, MIFF 2022) captures the heated atmosphere of late-20th-century geopolitics through a distinctly Australian lens\, bearing witness to events such as US ambassador Ed Clarke’s ‘peppercorn’ speech at North West Cape\, Gough Whitlam’s infamous dismissal from office and the civil unrest that rocked the nation during the Vietnam War. Twilight Time is a rich – and tremendously timely – look at Australia’s complicated involvement in global strategy\, defence policy and mass surveillance.

SUMMARY:Songs Inside + special performance from Nancy & Songbirds
DESCRIPTION:Fresh from a sell-out season and winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Adelaide Film Festival\, Songs Inside returns for a series of exclusive Event Screenings in December and January\, here at the Capri. \n\n\n\nThis special event includes a Q&A with the filmmakers and Songbirds + a drink on arrival. All ticket proceeds will go toward our social impact campaign to challenge societal attitudes about incarcerated women and advocate for systemic change. \n\n\n\n‘Songs Inside’ is a compelling feature-length documentary that chronicles the transformative journey of a small group of women from the Adelaide Women’s Prison who\, over six months\, discovered the healing power of music. As the creative process unfolds\, it unearths profound struggles with trauma and addiction\, demonstrating that even within the complexities of prison life\, music can serve as a universal force for healing and hope. Led by Barkindji singer-songwriter Nancy Bates\, their journey culminates in a historic performance—the largest concert ever staged within an Australian prison—featuring the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and an audience of over 200 inmates and special guests.  \n\n\n\nMore than just a film\, ‘Songs Inside’ is the centrepiece of a bold social impact campaign to challenge societal attitudes about incarcerated women and advocate for systemic change within Australia’s justice system.

SUMMARY:Songs Inside + Q&A with filmmakers & Songbirds

SUMMARY:The Great White Whale
DESCRIPTION:SCREENING AND Q&A \n\n\n\nDeep in the wild Southern Ocean\, halfway between Australia and Africa\, a snowy volcano\, almost three thousand metres high\, rears up from the sea like a great white whale. Five times it tried to kill the first team that sought to reach its summit. Yet back they sailed\, through the worst seas in the world\, this time with legendary explorer Bill Tilman as their skipper. \n\n\n\nThis is the extraordinary tale of those first attempts to climb Big Ben\, the smoking glacier ringed volcano on Heard Island\, Australia’s loneliest\, remotest outpost. It’s a tale told with quirky humour by those who were there\, backed up with their beautifully shot archival expedition footage. Paul Jarman’s brilliant music score\, pays tribute to the utter boldness of the quest\, bringing to life this little known moment in Australian history.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: Van Gogh - Poets and Lovers
DESCRIPTION:200 years after its opening and a century after acquiring its first Van Gogh works\, the National Gallery is hosting the UK’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition. Van Gogh is not only one of the most beloved artists of all time\, but perhaps the most misunderstood. \n\n\n\nThis film is a chance to reexamine and better understand this iconic artist. Focusing on his unique creative process\, Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers explores the artist’s years in the south of France\, where he revolutionised his style. Van Gogh became consumed with a passion for storytelling in his art\, turning the world around him into vibrant\, idealised spaces and symbolic characters. \n\n\n\nPoets and lovers filled his imagination; everything he did in the south of France served this new obsession. In part\, this is what caused his notorious breakdown\, but it didn’t hold back his creativity as he created masterpiece after masterpiece. Explore one of art history’s most pivotal periods in this once-in-a-century show. Made in close collaboration with the National Gallery.

SUMMARY:Tom Burlinson 'Still Swingin' live on stage
DESCRIPTION:Presenting Australian star of stage and screen\, Tom Burlinson\, in a sensational salute to the masters of vocal Swing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis dazzling\, energetic show presents a montage of swing classics made famous by the great superstars Tony Bennett\, Sammy Davis Jr\, Nat ‘King’ Cole\, Dean Martin\, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra\, through to the hits of the hugely successful modern favourites – Harry Connick Jr and Michael Bublé. \n\n\n\nTom’s illustrious career stretches from acting and singing to television host and theatrical producer. He first shot to stardom in the early ‘80s when he was cast in the title role in the movie The Man from Snowy River\, which became one of the most successful Australian films ever made. This led to a string of starring roles in Australian and international films. \n\n\n\nIn the ‘90’s\, Tom revealed that as well as being a talented actor\, he also had an amazing singing voice. \n\n\n\nHe was cast by Frank Sinatra’s daughter\, Tina in his first professional singing engagement as the voice of the young Frank in the Warner Brothers mini-series ‘Sinatra’. \n\n\n\nLater Tom created and starred in the acclaimed theatrical production ‘Frank – A Life in Song’\, a celebration of the life and career of the legendary Sinatra\, which played highly successful seasons at premier venues around Australia and overseas. \n\n\n\nNow he has explored the renowned achievements of other stars of the genre and chosen their best songs to perform\, as well as some Sinatra classics and timeless “standards” in “Still Swingin’”. This show truly has one great song after another! \n\n\n\nHe has included classics from the great Tony Bennett\, who was Sinatra’s favourite singer; the smooth and jazzy Nat ‘King’ Cole\, the multi-talented\, highly-energised Sammy Davis Jr\, the “King of Cool” Dean Martin\, and the sensational Bobby Darin. \n\n\n\nTom says his show would not be complete without a selection of Sinatra songs. \n\n\n\n“Many people who come to see the show will be expecting to hear some Sinatra. For me\, he was the greatest of them all\, but that’s not to say they weren’t all great.” \n\n\n\nThroughout the show Tom has included all-time favourites such as I’ve Got the World on a String\, \n\n\n\nFly Me to the Moon\, I’ve Got You Under My Skin\, and\, of course\, New York\, New York. \n\n\n\nVocal swing has become popular once again due to the immense popularity and success of artists such as Harry Connick Jr and Michael Bublé\, who have added their own spin to some of the greatest swing songs. \n\n\n\n“If you like these artists\, I’m confident that you will like what I’m doing in this show. I’ve found that youngeraudiences often don’t realise that many of these songs were originally written and performed back in the ‘40s and ‘50s. I like to set the record straight and make sure the audience knows by whom they were originally done. There’s no doubt Bublé is a huge fan of Sinatra and there’s also no doubt that Sinatra would love to know that a younger audience still loves his songs.” \n\n\n\nThe song list for the show is a feast of swing classics\, including Just in Time\, Beyond the Sea\, L-O-V-E\, Birth of the Blues\, Ain’t That a Kick in the Head?\, It Had to be You\, Sway\, Feeling Good and Mack the Knife. Also included are beautiful slower tempo numbers such as Unforgettable\, The Shadow of Your Smile\, Everybody Loves Somebody and Mr. Bojangles. \n\n\n\nMost of the musical arrangements in the show are based on the originals\, providing instant recognition for fans of the style. \n\n\n\nAccompanying Tom on stage as always will be a fabulous jazz band including some of Australia’s best musicians. \n\n\n\nSelected reviews: \n\n\n\n“Pure class and highly recommended” – The Sun Herald \n\n\n\n“Hugely enjoyable” – The Age \n\n\n\n“Tom Burlinson is sensational! His delivery makes one feel he is talking and singing directly to you” – The Adelaide Advertiser \n\n\n\nTHERE WILL BE A MEET AND GREET WITH TOM AFTER THE PERFORMANCE

SUMMARY:David Bailey accompanies the 1924 'Peter Pan' silent movie on the theatre organ
DESCRIPTION:David Bailey has built a strong reputation as an organist with a particular skill in accompanying silent movies. His program will include a screening of the 1924 film ‘Peter Pan’ in its centenary year since release. David has presented this program interstate to rave reviews and it will now be Adelaide’s turn to enjoy this experience. \n\n\n\nDavid Bailey is an Australian theatre organist\, composer and silent film accompanist based in Brisbane with a musical style influenced heavily by the popular music of the early to mid-twentieth century. A theatre organist firstly\, David’s main form of musical expression has always been connected to the silent film world\, but in 2007 he brought this expertise back to the cinema and pursued an interest in silent film accompaniment. Since then\, he has composed and performed scores for films from all over the world and every genre including many screenings for the Australian Cinematheque at GOMA. David strives to creatively reveal the huge musical resources of the theatre organ to modern audiences and offer a cinema experience that is simultaneously novel and nostalgic.
