SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Degas: Passion for Perfection
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITION ON SCREEN journeys from the streets of Paris to the heart of a superb exhibition at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge\, whose extensive collection of Degas’ works is the most representative in Britain. With exclusive access to view rare and diverse works\, this film tells a fascinating story of Degas’ pursuit for perfection through both experimentation with new techniques and lessons learnt from studying the past masters. \nSometimes frustrated by his own failings\, Degas was consumed by obsessive principles and failing eye sight but his determination to capture everyday life was evident in every mark he made. Never fully satisfied\, many of Degas’ drawings and sculptures were kept in private during his lifetime but\, now through close examination\, they can be seen as some of the most beautifully detailed and expressive works in the modern era. Using written accounts by friends and commentators\, and the narration of letters written by Degas himself\, this film reveals a more complex truth behind one of the most influential French artists of the late 19th-century and serves as an exploration of the complex workings of Degas’ artistic mind. \n“Art is not a matter of what you see\, but what you make other people see.” Edgar Degas

SUMMARY:Summer in the Forest
DESCRIPTION:SUMMER IN THE FOREST is a moving documentary of an extraordinary man—Jean Vanier—and of L’Arche\, the international organization of which he is the founder.  Jean Vanier single-handedly revolutionised the way in which people with an intellectual disability are seen and cared for\, by the simple act of inviting them out of institutions and into his home in the 1960s. ‘Meeting’ some of the current residents of that home in Trosly\, France\, is one of the many highlights of this beautiful film. \nThis is a Demand Film screening which means that it will not go ahead unless the minimum number is reached. If the event does not go ahead then you will not be charged.

SUMMARY:Bikes of Wrath
DESCRIPTION:Five Australians attempt to cycle 2600kms from Oklahoma to California in honour of the westward migration undertaken by ‘The Grapes of Wrath’s’ Joad family. Through chance encounters with everyday Americans\, the cyclists expand on the novel’s core themes of migration\, inequality and the perceived land of opportunity. The group explores whether America has progressed since the book was written\, discussing the wealth gap\, immigration and the American Dream. The fascinating people they meet along the way reveal the enduring strength of human spirit despite the inequality and disenfranchisement which runs as deep today\, as it did in Steinbeck’s seminal novel. The Bikes of Wrath is a unique\, funny and insightful documentary filled with adventure\, literature\, music\, and human connection. \nAs a Demand Film screening\, this will not go ahead unless the minimum number of tickets has been sold so do get in quick to ensure it goes ahead. If it doesn’t\, you won’t be charged.

SUMMARY:Rubber Jellyfish
DESCRIPTION:We all know that throwing rubbish on the ground is littering\, so why is letting a balloon float away seen as something different? Rubber Jellyfish is a feature-length documentary that explores the effects of helium balloons on the environment\, wildlife and human beings. Mum-to-be Carly Wilson sets out on a personal journey to meet key players on all sides in the fight to ban balloons\, and exposes the confronting truth behind our favourite party product. As she travels around Australia and explores problems around the world\, seeking to understand the science and various points of view\, Carly discovers a range of issues\, from the heartbreaking impact on sea turtles to the potentially deadly effect of helium on children. Her journey takes her from littered beaches to the capital\, as she speaks to businesses and politicians to find out why the balloon problem is being ignored and if something can be done.
