SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: Van Gogh - Poets and Lovers
DESCRIPTION:200 years after its opening and a century after acquiring its first Van Gogh works\, the National Gallery is hosting the UK’s biggest ever Van Gogh exhibition. Van Gogh is not only one of the most beloved artists of all time\, but perhaps the most misunderstood. \n\n\n\nThis film is a chance to reexamine and better understand this iconic artist. Focusing on his unique creative process\, Van Gogh: Poets & Lovers explores the artist’s years in the south of France\, where he revolutionised his style. Van Gogh became consumed with a passion for storytelling in his art\, turning the world around him into vibrant\, idealised spaces and symbolic characters. \n\n\n\nPoets and lovers filled his imagination; everything he did in the south of France served this new obsession. In part\, this is what caused his notorious breakdown\, but it didn’t hold back his creativity as he created masterpiece after masterpiece. Explore one of art history’s most pivotal periods in this once-in-a-century show. Made in close collaboration with the National Gallery.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen: My National Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The National Gallery of London is one of the world’s greatest art galleries. It is full of masterpieces\, an endless resource of history\, an endless source of stories. But whose stories are told? Which art has the most impact and on whom? The power of great art lies in its ability to communicate with anyone\, no matter their art historical knowledge\, their background\, their beliefs. \n\n\n\nThis film gives voice to those who work at the gallery – from cleaner to curator\, security guard to director – who identify the one artwork that means the most to them and why. An assortment of people from all walks of life who have a strong connection to the gallery make surprising choices of both well-known and lesser-known artworks. Finally\, some well-known celebrities explain what they head for when they visit the gallery. These stories are used as a lens through which to explore the 200-year history of the National Gallery and what the future may hold for this spectacular space.

SUMMARY:EOS - Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on Screen presents Mary Cassatt: Painting the Modern Woman \nMary Cassatt made a career painting the lives of the women around her. Her radical images showed them as intellectual\, feminine and real\, which was a major shift in the way women appeared in art. \nPresenting her astonishing prints\, pastels\, and paintings\, this film introduces us to the often-overlooked Impressionist whose own career was as full of contradiction as the women she painted. \nShe printed\, sketched\, and painted dozens of images of mothers and children yet she never married or had children herself. She was a classically trained artist but chose to join a group of Parisian radicals – the Impressionists – a movement that transformed the language of art. \nThe world’s most eminent Cassatt curators and scholars help tell this riveting tale of great social and cultural change; a time when women were fighting for their rights and the language of art was completely re-written. Mary Cassatt and her modern women were at the heart of it all. \nDespite being a prolific painter of women\, Cassatt detested being described as a ‘woman painter’.\nCassatt was born in America and became one of America’s most well-known artists.

SUMMARY:EOS - Hopper
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on Screen presents Hopper. \n\n\n\n\nHopper’s work is the most recognisable art in America – popular\, praised\, and mysterious. Countless painters\, photographers\, filmmakers\, and musicians have been influenced by his art – but who was he\, and how did a struggling illustrator create such a bounty of notable work? \nThis new film takes a deep look into Hopper’s art\, his life\, and his relationships. From his early career as an illustrator; his wife giving up her own promising art career to be his manager; his critical and commercial acclaim; and in his own words – this film explores the enigmatic personality behind the brush… \nCombined with expert interviews\, diaries\, and a startling visual reflection of American life\, Hopper brings to life America’s arguably most influential artist. \nHopper is a rare artist whose work is accessible to both the casual and critical observer.\nRothko\, Banksy\, Alfred Hitchcock\, David Lynch\, and even The Simpsons have all been inspired by the unique way Hopper captured American life.\nReleased to coincide with the major Hopper exhibition (Edward Hopper’s New York) at the Whitney Museum of American Art\, New York (Oct 22 – Mar 23).

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Canaletto and the Art of Venice
DESCRIPTION:Canaletto & the Art of Venice is an immersive journey into the life and art of Venice’s famous view-painter. \nNo artist better captures the essence and allure of Venice than Giovanni Antonio Canal\, better known as Canaletto. Despite Canaletto’s close relationship with the city in which he lived and died\, the world’s largest collection of his works resides not in his native Italy\, but in Britain as part of the Royal Collection. In 1762\, George III purchased almost the entire collection amassed by Joseph Smith\, British Consul in Venice and Canaletto’s principal agent. \nEXHIBITION ON SCREEN’s release grants unique access to the Royal Collection’s exceptional holdings of Canaletto’s work\, much of which was on display as part of the exhibition Canaletto & the Art of Venice at The Queen’s Gallery (19 May – 12 November 2017). The remarkable group of over 200 paintings\, drawings and prints on unparalleled insight into the artistry of Canaletto and his contemporaries\, and the city he became a master at capturing. The film also offers the chance to step inside two official royal residences – Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle – to learn more about the artist\, and Joseph Smith\, the man who introduced Canaletto to Britain. \nFrom London\, Canaletto & the Art of Venice will travel to the great Italian city to explore the origins of Canaletto’s art. Whilst appearing to be faithful representations of the city\, Canaletto’s skill came from his manipulation of reality. He moved buildings around or opened up vistas to create the perfect composition\, and his paintings of Venice were highly sought after by Grand Tourists. His playful imagination extended into a new genre in which he excelled. The ‘capriccio’ combined real and fantasy architecture into imagined views. In this sense\, Canaletto is more than a topographical artist – he is a master storyteller. \nCinema-goers will embark on their very own 21st century Grand Tour\, visiting the sites enjoyed by their 18th century counterparts and immortalised in Canaletto’s views – from the Rialto Bridge to the Piazza San Marco\, and the Palazzo Ducale to the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo. Guided by Royal Collection Trust curators and the world’s leading experts in Venetian history\, the film is not only a wonderful way to see the exhibition\, but an opportunity to get closer to Canaletto and the city that inspired him.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Frida Kahlo (encore)
DESCRIPTION:This highly engaging film takes us on a journey through the life of one of the most prevalent female icons: Frida Kahlo. She was a prolific self-portraitist\, using the canvas as a mirror through all stages of her turbulent and\, at times\, tragic life. Guided with interview\, commentary and Frida’s own words\, EXHIBITION ON SCREEN uncovers that this\, however\, was not a life defined by tragedy. \nFeaturing key exhibitions and interviews with world-renowned Kahlo curators\, EXHIBITION ON SCREEN explores the extraordinary symbolism and themes in these personal canvases to seek a deeper understanding of the real Frida Kahlo. \nUsing cinema to take an up-close and intimate look at her works we examine how great an artist she can be considered. Displaying a treasure trove of colour and a feast of vibrancy on screen\, this personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works and highlights the source of her feverish creativity\, her resilience and her unmatched lust for life\, men\, women\, politics and her cultural heritage. \nWe might think we already know Frida Kahlo – the image of floral crowns\, big brows and folk style clothing have made her a muse to generations – but what lies beneath the surface of this intensely passionate woman?

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Lucian Freud
DESCRIPTION:For the first time in history the Royal Academy of Arts in London\, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston\, is bringing together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. \nThe exhibition will display more than 50 paintings\, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. One of the most celebrated painters of our time\, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20th-century artists who portrayed themselves with such consistency. \nSpanning nearly seven decades his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter\, from his earliest portrait painted in 1939 to the final one executed 64 years later. When seen together\, his portraits represent an engrossing study into the dynamic of ageing and the process of self-representation.
This intensely compelling exhibition creates a unique opportunity for EXHIBITION ON SCREEN to reveal the life’s work of a master in one show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Leonardo da Vinci
DESCRIPTION:Marking the 500th anniversary of Leonardo’s death \nLeonardo da Vinci is acclaimed as the world’s favourite artist. Many TV shows and feature films have showcased this extraordinary genius but often not examined closely enough is the most crucial element of all: his art. Leonardo’s peerless paintings and drawings will be the focus of Leonardo: The Works\, as EXHIBITION ON SCREEN presents every single attributed painting\, in Ultra HD quality\, never seen before on the big screen. Key works include The Mona Lisa\, The Last Supper\, Lady with an Ermine\, Ginevra de’ Benci\, Madonna Litta\, Virgin of the Rocks\, and more than a dozen others. \nThis film also looks afresh at Leonardo’s life – his inventiveness\, his sculptural skills\, his military foresight and his ability to navigate the treacherous politics of the day – through the prism of his art. To be released on the 500th anniversary of his death\, this is the definitive film about Leonardo: the first to truly tell the whole story.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Sunflowers
DESCRIPTION:Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers are among his most famous works\, and are some of the most iconic paintings in the world. In an extraordinary exhibition\, the Van Gogh Museum took a new and revealing look at the five publicly-owned versions of sunflowers in a vase. And once again\, the \nVan Gogh museum opened its doors exclusively to Exhibition on Screen. \nThey are immediately recognisable\, but our film goes beyond the surface to explore the many questions and mysteries that surround these works. Why\, for example\, did Van Gogh choose the exotic sunflower with its long stem and golden crown? Indeed\, when did the flower itself arrive in Europe and how had previous artists reacted to it? What was Van Gogh trying to say with his works and how does that differ from version to version? And what secrets did scientists discover when they analysed the work in detail? All is revealed in this fascinating film\, which travelled beyond Amsterdam to Tokyo\, Philadelphia\, London and Munich to film\, in incredible high- definition detail\, all five of the works. \nEach painting is different and has its own unique story\, spanning one of the most famous and turbulent periods in art history. All five paintings are also now considered to be in such a delicate state that there will never be a show with all five alongside one another ever again. Only in this film will you have a chance to see that on the screen – in our virtual exhibition. In doing so\, the film brings to audiences many new levels of understanding both about the paintings and about Vincent van Gogh.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Van Gogh & Japan
DESCRIPTION:“I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based – VAN GOGH & JAPAN at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – one can see why. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art. \nOne cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet\, Degas and\, above all\, Van Gogh. Visiting the new galleries of Japanese art in Paris and thrn creating his own image of Japan – through in-depth research\, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction. \nAfter leaving Paris for the south of France – to what he thought of as near to a kind of Japan as he could find – the productive and yet troubled years that followed must all be seen in the context of Van Gogh bending Japanese influences to his will and defining himself as a modern artist with clear Asian precursors. \nIn this little known story of Van Gogh’s art we see just how important his study of Japan was. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.

SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - Rembrandt
DESCRIPTION:Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated but this major show hosted by London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum was an event like no other. \nGiven privileged access to both galleries the film documents this landmark exhibition\, whilst interweaving Rembrandt’s life story\, with behind-the-scenes preparations at these world famous institutions. Exploring many of the exhibition’s key works\, through contributions from specially invited guests including curators and leading art historians\, this EXHIBITION ON SCREEN favourite makes a welcome return to the big screen. \nFor many\, Rembrandt is the greatest artist that ever lived and this deeply moving film seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend.
